The Quistrebert Brothers
“ice in the sun”
Opening Reception: SATURDAY, November 21, 2009. 7-11PM
158 N.W. 91Street, Miami, FL 33150
Carol Jazzar in association with The Consulate of France in Miami is pleased to present the Miami debut of Florian & Michael Quistrebert, aka The Quistrebert Brothers.
For their first Miami solo exhibition, “Ice in the Sun”, The Quistrebert Brothers will exhibit a series of paintings inspired by their recent residency in Brooklyn and their video 'Virgins', a loop featuring a static totemic figure drifting endlessly through a bejeweled vacuum of space that will enjoy a special large-scale screening outside on the gallery’s lawn.
The paintings on view were produced during the pair’s current residency (Jan-Dec 2009) in New York which was sponsored by the French Government. Working out of DUMBO, a neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn characterized by large relatively inexpensive loft spaces and named after the acronym for Down Under The Manhattan Bridge Overpass, The Quistrebert Brothers drew inspiration from the area’s historic fabric, percolating it through filters of modern industry and the increasing gentrification of and by the urban landscape.
Incorporating the numerous sanctuaries of gothic architecture scattered throughout the city these late works reverberate with geometry, towered peaks and a potent sense of foreboding expressed through oily paste on acrylic backgrounds and by canvases whose tactile surfaces are literally dripping with heavy, gelatinous paint.
Evoking dark, hallucinatory states of mind the many build-ups of gloss and matte, spiral motifs and eerily luminescent skeletal renditions of period edifices, combine to create dark psychedelic landscapes; empty of humans, but filled with allusions to societal consequence and the enduring doom of prior cataclysmic events.
The Quistrebert Brothers have exhibited their works extensively in Galleries in Europe and US and have had solo exhibit at the Musee des Beaux Arts de Nantes, France and recently at “Le Printemps de Septembre” Fondation Espace Ecureuil in Toulouse, France.
Exhibit through December 31, 2009. Saturday & Sunday; 1-6PM and by appointment.
