Guerra de la Paz “OTHERWORLD”

January 16th - March 10th, 2009

Opening reception:

Friday, January 16thh, 7-10PM

Carol Jazzar is pleased to present OTHERWORLD; an exhibition of found textile, garments and objects by Miami based Art collaborative Guerra de la Paz. This will be the artist’s second solo show with the gallery.

Puppet masters of the contemporary arts, Cuban born American collaborative Guerra de la Paz breathe life into their sculptures and installations with a sublime appreciation for form. Characterized by anthropomorphic vibrancy and bucolic elegance their work, inspired by the ready-made, honors a host of cultures with references to traditional disciplines, historic themes and classic icons.

Composing their iconic imagery from personal effects, the artists imbue each piece with the individual pasts of its cumulative parts. Perhaps as intricate and mysterious as the work itself, these previously owned items, each saturated with energy from a previous life, cause a wealth of associations to bud in the imagination.

Captivated by social dynamics Guerra de la Paz now summon upon the mythologies and religions of the world’s dead civilizations to demonstrate how change given enough time, can turn fact into fiction and visa versa. A testament to the enduring yet irregular significance of human life, this exhibition presents a trove of curious metaphors, allegorical symbols of faith and otherworldly creatures whose powers have long since outlasted the societies that created them.

Established in 1996, Guerra de la Paz is the composite name which represents their creative identity of Alain Guerra, born in Cuba Havana, Cuba in 1968 and Neraldo de la Paz, born in Mantanaz, Cuba in 1955, who both now live and work in Miami. Previous to their forthcoming exhibitions “Shape of Things: New Sculpture” at the Saatchi Gallery in London, England and “Space Unlimited” at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington DC, they have exhibited in group shows since 1997 and solo shows since 2001 including the Art & Cultural Center of Hollywood, FL, The Miami Art Museum, FL, the Chicago Cultural Center, IL, 21C Museum, Louisville KY, Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan WI,  as well as in various galleries throughout the United States.

Exhibit runs through March 10th, 2009 - Saturday & Sunday; 1-6 PM and by appointment.
