artist statement

We are a nation of self-improvement, do-it-yourself novels and television
shows. In a time where surgery and medicine advertise quick fixes, I offer my own
manuals. My work is how-to guides demonstrating procedures I have invented to
improve the usefulness of the human body. American culture has a fascination
with what is repulsive or disturbing. The work elicits a physical response from the
viewer by portraying body manipulation such as cutting, sewing,or gouging. My
work parallels social improvement procedures which are absurd in design yet
possible. A procedure of adding and adapting the body may make life easier but
the process is not simple to carry out. I propose simplicity through tedium. My
manner of depicting procedures through simplified colors devoid of real blood or
detail makes the actions distanced and removed from reality. The procedures are
a sarcastic commentary on what improvement brings. Each step is ambiguous and
simplified, forcing the viewer to be distanced from the procedures. Through coaxing
colors and simple drawings, I epresent body-altering procedures as a means of
discussing modern man’s idea that he may trump evolution for usefulness. It is
a remarkable state of society to be able to reshape nature with science. It is
significant for both its audacity and vision. To permanently mold the body into a
new form is both ludicrous and courageous.
